New Mobile Dental Unit is Helping Walnut Street Community Health Center Expand Its Dental Services

A new $320,000 RV-like mobile dental unit is helping Walnut Street Community Health Center in downtown Hagerstown, MD expand its dental care services to more children in the community. Before the mobile unit, clinic officials who visited schools were limited to talking about dental and nutritional health, and handing out toothbrushes and toothpaste. Now, the mobile unit’s dental staff can visit schools and address immediate needs such as fillings and extractions.

Affordable Care Act Grant Awards Help to Support School-Based Health Centers

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, more than $14 million was awarded today to 45 school-based health centers across the country allowing the number of children served to increase by nearly 50 percent, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced.

Clinics receiving the awards, made possible by the health reform law, are already providing much-needed health care services to 112,000 children. Today’s infusion of new money will enable them to expand their capacity and modernize their facilities, which will allow them to treat an estimated additional 53,000 children in 29 States.

West Baltimore Primary Care Stakeholder Coalition Commences

On Friday, December 9, a coalition of stakeholders in the West Baltimore community was convened to discuss an ongoing primary care assessment of the Western half of the city. Stakeholders were comprised of various groups, including the Maryland State Senate, U.S. Congress, federally qualified health centers, philanthropic foundations, hospitals, and community groups. The group was convened by the Mid-Atlantic Association of Community Health Centers (MACHC) in conjunction with Bon Secours Hospital. The goal of the meeting was to discuss the status and results of the ongoing West Baltimore Primary Care Assessment being conducted by consulting firm John Snow, Inc (JSI).

States Receive Resources to Implement Affordable Insurance Exchanges

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today awarded nearly $220 million in Affordable Insurance Exchange grants to 13 states to help them create Exchanges, giving these states more flexibility and resources to implement the Affordable Care Act. The health care reform law gives states the freedom to design Affordable Insurance Exchanges – one-stop marketplaces where consumers can choose a private health insurance plan that fits their health needs and have the same kinds of insurance choices as members of Congress.
